"Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him...Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” Others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.” vv.3,14-15
Read chapter 6.
We now see Jesus in His own country of Nazareth teaching and doing mighty works, yet His own town, the people He grew up with doubted and rejected Him. Nothing that was familiar to them they though could be from God. The extraordinary became the ordinary to them. What daily ordinary things have you taken for granted as gifts from God?
We then see others guess at who they think Jesus might be as He was definitely more than a man. Herod thinks it's John the Baptist resurrected. This could not be as Jesus was already alive and walking the earth as man when John was but a babe and after Johns death. Some guess Elijah. They would guess this from prophesies that Elijah will return from Malachi 4:5 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord." Or that He could be THE prophet that Moses spoke about in Deuteronomy 18:15-22. Yes Jesus was The Prophet and more as being God Himself! As we'll see later Jesus asks "Who do you say that I am?" So to you: Who is Jesus?
