But afterward they changed their minds and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again. v.11
Read chapter 34
King Zedekiah has just made a covenant with God that he and all the people of Judah will set their slaves free. This they were already commanded in the law to do after six years of enslavement- yet they did not. This covenant to set their slaves free was right before they were to go into captivity becoming slaves under Babylon rule. Hezekiah and the people agree to this probably thinking if they set their slaves free God will end the siege they were in at the moment, because they quickly take back their slaves after realizing them. For whatever reason though thy took back their slaves when they were suppose to free them shows their lack of obedience and discipline. Just as their false freedom they did to their slaves so this false freedom came upon them. What they thought God was to strict on or felt enslaved to actually was a false freedom that really enslaved them to their own lusts, desires and ultimately a sinful ruler to the world. God's way truly is freedom when you let Him be your Master. Have you experience freedom in Christ? How have you experience false freedom? What areas of your life do you attempt to be obedient to God yet quickly break that promise?
