Deuteronomy 20

"‘What man is there who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it.  Also what man is there who has planted a vineyard and has not eaten of it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man eat of it.  And what man is there who is betrothed to a woman and has not married her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man marry her.’" vv.5-7

Read chapter 20
There were four grounds for exemption from war:
1) The man who had not dedicated, or initiated living in his new house.  "The family needed the man much more than the battlefield did, so he was deferred for a year" (BE Equipped, Warren Wiersbe).
2) The man who planted a new vineyard and hadn't yet tasted of it's harvest.
3) The man engaged who had not yet married.  He would be deferred for a year according to Deuteronomy 24:5.
4)  The man who is fearful or fainthearted.  This we only see carried out as a command in Judges 7 when Gideon let 22,000 soldier return home due to fear.

These four exceptions were commanded by God.  Seems to show how God cares for "common daily blessings of life of home, harvest and honeymoons  than devoting ourselves only to the battles of life" (Wiersbe).  What common blessings have you been distracted from due to battles (physical, spiritual, or emotional)?  How have you seen "battles" hurt the home, harvest or honeymoon?
