2 Peter 2

"For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; " v.4

Did you know the word "hell" isn't really in the Bible?  Many English Bibles have translated from the Greek words hades, tartarus, gehenna all to mean the same English word hell.  Yet this cannot be as there clearly has to be a difference since there's at least three Greek words to describe one English word.  We'll just focus on this verse in 2 Peter 2 for today.  The Greek work for hell here is Tartarus and it's only occurrence in scripture is here; though we have a key from Jude 6 as to more of a description of what Tartarus is: "And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day."  So comparing 2 Peter 2:4 with Jude 6 we see that Tartarus is like a dungeon, being in everlasting chains in darkness until the Judgment Day.  It also seems to be that only angles are in Tartarus and not a place or state for man.
I challenge you to do a word study of the different words of hell in scripture and compare and see what you find.
