And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said:
“Behold, I am setting a plumb line
In the midst of My people Israel;
I will not pass by them anymore. v.8
In the midst of My people Israel;
I will not pass by them anymore. v.8
What is a plumb line? I mean I don't think they had plumbing in their homes for their toilets and showers the way we do today and I don't think it's a line of fruit either. What it is is a line with a weight on one end to find the vertical measure. When you hold or place one end of the cord at a point and let the other end with the weight drop you get a straight vertical line. Today a leveler is used to make sure walls are level when a building is being built. Think of when you've been in a house or a building where the room seems to slant as you walk across the room or it appears like an optical illusion if it's really live or not, it's probably because a plumb line or level wasn't used.
So is God talking here to the Israelites about building a level house? No. But what He is referring to is testing His people by measuring them by this standard and that standard is truth, what makes a perfect line. God's divine measure is what is going to test the people for what they truly are, not just what they appear to be. Are they an optical illusion appearing straight or appearing slanted? Jesus Christ is the plumb line. He is our standard. By Him the world will be tested.
Are you living as an optical illusion? When you're being measured for testing in school you want to know what the standard is like how many pages you must write. So our standard by God is through Jesus Christ, have you met this plumb line?
