Better is a little with the fear of the Lord,
Than great treasure with trouble.
17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is,
Than a fatted calf with hatred. vv.16-17
Read chapter 15
Would you rather go out to fancy expensive meal with your enemies or eat at a friends home of leftovers? Is it the food that drives your or the company? Do you choose to hang out with your one good friend or join a party of acquaintances? Often times we choose the outward appearance to the world than what really matters. How many times I hung out with the "popular" kids in high school than with my good friends from grade school, never being my real self, doing things I shouldn't do or just waiting for the time to go home.
The Lord is our greatest treasure, yet do we treat Him like that? "Believers have enough when worldly eyes see little" (Matthew Henry's Commentary). Do we treasure our possessions more or always feel like we need more? If you lost everything would you still be content knowing you can't lose Christ? Jesus is a substitute for every good, but nothing is a substitute for Him.
