He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,
But whoever walks wisely will be delivered. v.26
Read chapter 28
We can't trust ourselves. We can't just "follow your heart" as the old saying goes. Even the prophet Jeremiah said this in Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can understand it?"
So how then do we know how to walk wisely if we can't trust our own hearts? It's to seek godly wisdom from others and of course from God Himself. We need to distrust our own judgement, strength, and merit. We need to realize how we have been deceived by our own heart in the past and learn how we must walk to avoid foolishness. Sometimes our response has been slighting the advice of others because we're so caught up in our own righteousness of what we want.
Make the testimonies of the Lord your counselors and don't neglect the wisdom of those around you. When has your heart caused you to be foolish? In what area of your life do you need to ask and seek godly counsel?
