Proverbs 18

A man who has friends must himself be friendly,[b]
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. v.24

Read chapter 18
Would you say you're more closer to your siblings or your friends when it comes to deep real relationship?  Most of us would say our friends.  Why is that?  We will have many friends throughout our lifetime, but there is always that one that is a constant friend through many season of life.  This doesn't mean bad relations with siblings, as I know many people who are good friends with their siblings, myself included; definitely more friendly after high school years.  Yet there seems to be a different kind of intimacy with a friend than with a sibling.  You don't necessarily get to pick who's going to be your sibling, but you do get to choose who will be your friend.
Following the Masoretic text translation of the Old Testament the first line ought to read "A man of many friends may come to ruin."  Why come to ruin?  Because with many friends means constant hospitality that will drain you, more surface level conversations, and when in need may be deserted.  It is not the multitude of friends that will help us, but the one who loves deeper than family.  May you seek Jesus Christ as your best friend whose love is constant no matter what and be blessed with one good friend on this earth too.  Who is your one friend that is closer than a sibling?
