Nehemiah 4

Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon. v.17

Read chapter 4

Because of the warnings of attack, they had to be prepared at all times to defend themselves. Notice this fear doesn't stop them from building, from carrying out their daily lives, from doing the work for the Lord. How often when there's something of threat in our lives that we hide, run away, change our plans. Yes, sometimes it's necessary but we are to fear God alone and ask Him for discernment in how to respond. I love the picture this paints of working with a sword.  One hand working, the other hand always being armed to defend and fight. As we know from Ephesians 6 of the armor of God- the sword is the word of God and we should use it as our defender and fighter. To always have it on hand (either physically or in our minds) to defend against attacks of the enemy. Just like the Jews knew there were enemies all around and they would attack, so we too know Satan's schemes (2 Cor. 2:11) and that he's constantly surrounding us looking for where we are weak.

Are you on guard as you go about your daily life?
