Luke 18

"So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God." v.19

Read chapter 18
Is it wrong to call someone good?  If this verse taken out of context it's blasphemy or odd that Jesus would say such as thing as we see in other parts of scripture people called good.  For example Cornelius is called a good man in Acts 11 or Jesus references the difference between good men and evil men in Matthew 12.  But taking this verse in context we realize Jesus is answering the man who came to Him asking a question about how to inherit eternal life.  Perhaps the man was basing his right to inherit eternal life on being good, doing good works yet the Lord sees this lack of faith and trust in his own might.  So the Lord makes this statement that no one is good but God.  We have to realize that when we call men good, just as Jesus did and other parts of scripture, that it's all relative.  There are good people in our world and their are bad people too, but this isn't what saves them unto eternal life.  Even good people sin and bad people have moments of goodness, but only God is wholly and always good.  What gives us eternal life is grace through faith, not of works (Ephesians 2).  We unfortunately see this man walk away from a chance to have faith by taking God who was speaking to him and responding according to what Jesus stated.
So next time someone asks how are you doing and your natural immediate response is 'good' think on the One who is wholly good!
